About Letters in Applied Microbiology

Launched in 1985, as a sister journal to Journal of Applied Microbiology, Letters in Applied Microbiology (LAM) is a flagship title of Applied Microbiology International, whose members benefit from free online access and discounts on open access publishing fees.

Letters in Applied Microbiology aims to be the journal to support and develop the next generation of applied microbiologists. With a focus on early career scientists, it provides rapid publication of short well-designed studies containing robust datasets and insightful analysis. With a focus on the quality of science, we do not exclude papers based on subjective views of their potential impact. Replication studies, along with those of niche interest or showing negative results, are all welcome.

Scope

The broad scope of Letters of Applied Microbiology encompasses the full breadth of applied microbiology research, exploring topics that include (but are not limited to):

  • Clinical microbiology

  • Human, animal and environmental microbiomes

  • Sanitation and public health microbiology

  • Bacteriology, mycology

  • Antimicrobials, Resistance and Chemotherapy

  • Applied microbial and cell physiology

  • Genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics

  • Environmental microbiology and biotechnology

  • Food microbiology

  • Agricultural and plant microbiology

  • Industrial microbiology

  • Enzymology and protein engineering

New Editorial Process – training the Editors of the future

Our Handling Editor board now has two tiers, Senior Editors and Junior Editors. Our Senior Editors are experienced Editors who act as mentors to a new tier of Junior Editors, early career scientists from around the globe who have been selected for a two-year editor training programme. All papers which pass the initial screening by the Editor-in-Chief are handled jointly by a Senior and a Junior Editor.

We also have a new two-tier Reviewing Editor Board, made up of Senior Reviewing Editors and Junior Reviewing Editors. This board is dedicated to reviewing submissions to the journal and works on a similar basis to the handling tier, with the Senior team mentoring the Junior team to improve the quality of peer reviews. Where feasible, one review (for each paper sent out for review) will be carried out by a Junior Reviewing Editor, who will submit their review to their mentor to make improvements before the review goes to the author.

Why publish in LAM?

  • LAM is society-owned, now with a not-for-profit publisher -all profits from the journal go to supporting the community and furthering science
  • The surplus from LAM pays for a wide variety of grants available to the AMI community – LAM authors can join the AMI community for free
  • New focus on inclusivity – Editors will not judge the potential impact of papers. All papers that demonstrate strong methods, sound data and analysis and good ethical practices will be considered

Benefits for LAM authors

  • All LAM authors are entitled to a complimentary year’s membership to AMI on acceptance of their paper.
  • Free format submission – saving authors valuable time
  • It is free to publish with no page or colour charges
  • We have reduced peer review times – mean time from submission to first decision now 25 days
  • We have reduced publishing times -with continuous publication, mean production times are now 18 days
  • LAM is a PCI friendly journal - submit your work with reviews and recommendations from PCI Microbiology and save time

Open access in LAM

  • Both pay-to-publish (Gold) and self-archive (Green) open access publishing options are available
  • Authors from institutions with a transitional deal (also known as read and publish agreements) can publish in the journals at no cost
  • Applied Microbiology International members receive a 20% discount on article processing charges (APCs)
