Introduction

It has been suggested that females do not differentiate the experience of sexual desire and sexual arousal, the DSM5 female’s sexual dysfunction reflects this assumption with the proposed female sexual interest/arousal disorder.

Objective

To investigate if there are differences between the perceptions of desire and arousal among a large group of Mexican females and, if this is different among females with and without sexual dysfunction using criteria of the FSFI.

Methods

A list of 32 possible descriptors of female sexual arousal and desire was developed using several validated measures of female sexual function and dysfunction and further validated by a panel of experts. Then a questionnaire with a Likert scale was constructed with each descriptor assessed as an indication of desire and as an indication of arousal. In addition, a Spanish version of the FSFI was included. The Ethics Committee if the Institution approved the study, and informed consent was obtained prior to participation. An online survey was prepared and participants were invited via the social network and emailing list of the Institution. A total of 1,140 responded the demographic and desire and arousal questions and 1,055 of the also responded the FSFI. Respondents had an age mean of 34.21 years (sd= 11.293) and a range from 18 to 79, most of them with graduate and post graduate educational level. The distribution of responses for each descriptor was compared, using the Wilcoxon signed rank test.
