Objective

Objectives: Previous studies have verified the association of human papillomavirus (HPV) with cervical cancer and condyloma acuminata. HPV vaccination is currently the most effective method for preventing HPV infection. Therefore, studies on preventive medicine have often used the health belief model (HBM) to explore examinees’ health behaviors.

Methods

Methods: The HBM was adopted to explore the willingness of female university students in southern Taiwan to receive the HPV vaccine, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to investigate related predictors. Between October and December of 2016, 1,000 questionnaires were distributed to female freshman students in a university of technology in southern Taiwan, and 834 valid questionnaires were recovered. Correlation analysis and SEM were used to analyze respondents’ willingness to receive the HPV vaccine.

Results

Results: Perceived severity and perceived morbidity did not exert a direct or indirect effect on students’ willingness to receive the HPV vaccine. Action cues and self-efficacy mediated the effects of perceived vaccination benefits and perceived vaccination barriers on students’ willingness to receive the HPV vaccine.
