Objective

Peyronie's disease (PD) is an acquired fibrotic disorder in the tunica albuginea. PD can have a significant negative impact on mood and quality of life. Although the psychological impact of PD has generally been understudied, there has been a growing body of literature that has assessed the impact PD can have on men's mental health and relationships. The aim of this study was to assess the psychosocial impact, symptom bother and pain in men with PD.

Methods

The study was designed to use validated questionnaires at their initial consultation: The Self-Esteem and Relationship (SEAR) questionnaire, which was validated in measuring sexual relationship, confidence and self-esteem. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), this questionnaire is utilized for the assessment of the symptoms of depression and the cutoff scores allow for the identification of those at risk for clinical depression. Moderate and severe depressive symptoms were defined as >14 and >21, respectively. The Peyronie’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ) is a specific questionnaire designed to identify the psychosexual impact from based on 3 specific subscale domains: PD psychological and physical symptoms, penile pain and Peyronie’s symptom bother.
