Established in 1942, Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology publishes peer-reviewed studies on neuropathology and experimental neuroscience, book reviews, and letters and covers a broad spectrum of fields in basic neuroscience with an emphasis on human neurological diseases. It is written by and for neuropathologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, pathologists, psychiatrists, and basic neuroscientists from around the world.

Official journal of the American Association of Neuropathologists, Inc. (AANP)

Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology is the official journal of the AANP, a professional society of neuropathologists, composed of physicians and scientists involved in research, training, and the clinical practice of neuropathology. AANP seeks to disseminate and create knowledge about disorders affecting the nervous system and to educate and mentor young physicians and scientists in the field.

Open access option for authors

Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology authors have the option to publish their paper under the open access (OA) initiative; whereby, for a charge, their paper will be made freely available online immediately upon publication. Publishing OA offers several benefits for authors including:

  • Increased visibility and accessibility: OA articles are freely available to anyone, removing any barriers to knowledge. This leads to increased readership and usage by a global audience, including researchers, students, policymakers, and the general public.
  • Higher citation potential: OA articles tend to receive higher citation rates compared to articles published behind paywalls. This further boosts the impact and recognition of your work. A recent analysis has shown that, on average, OA articles in Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology were cited 5 times compared to non-OA articles which were cited 3 times, and OA reviews were cited 8 times compared to twice for non-OA reviews.
  • Public engagement and societal impact: Publishing OA allows research to reach a broader audience beyond the academic field.
  • For manuscripts with AANP members as an author(s), Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology will offset the costs for OA of up to 30 articles for the calendar year 2024.
  • Compliance with funding agency policies: Many funding agencies and institutions now require research outputs to be published OA, as it aligns with the principles of public funding and maximizing societal and science progress.

Oxford University Press has Read and Publish agreements with institutions and consortia which provide funding for open access publication. This means authors from participating institutions can publish open access, and the institution will pay the charge. Click here to see if your institution is participating. AANP members also benefit from a reduced OA publishing rate and page charge waiver. Furthermore, the journal editors can select specific papers to be published OA free of charge, with the funding provided by the AANP.
