Abstract

Nanostructures stabilized in nm‐sized alloy clusters have been studied by transmission electron microscopy, using clusters in the Au‐Sb and Au‐Sn binary systems, in which the composition of alloy clusters falls in the two‐phase region in the bulk alloy phase diagram. When the diameters of both Au‐Sn and Au‐Sb alloy clusters are smaller than several nm, it becomes difficult to form the two obviously different phases in the interior of individual clusters and, consequently, an amorphous‐like nanostructure (including an ultra‐fine grain structure) appears. It is suggested that the degree of refinement in the amorphous‐like nanostructure may be related closely to the stability of the interface of two different phases.
