Immunotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck
Immune checkpoint inhibitors play a crucial role in the strategy for treating squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.
Bladder preservation therapy for muscle invasive bladder cancer: the past, present and future
This review article summarized the evidence and on-going clinical trials of bladder preservation therapy for muscle invasive bladder cancer in the past and future immuno-oncology era.
Original Articles
Basic Research
Establishing metastatic patient-derived xenograft model for colorectal cancer
Metastatic patient-derived xenograft mouse models for colorectal cancer were established with shorter time and higher success rate. And they retained the dominant characters of the original patient tumours.
Hepato-biliary and Pancreatic Medicine
Characteristics of genomic alterations in Chinese cholangiocarcinoma patients
Gene mutations of 63 cholangiocarcinoma patients were evaluated. We found that intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma frequently occurred in young patients, and BAP1 and LRP2 could be biomarkers for Chinese intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma patients.
Epidemiology/Public Health
Impact of reduced smoking rates on lung cancer screening programs in Japan
With decreased smoking rates and aging of the population, lung cancer screening may be better targeted to a smaller at-risk population.
Development and validation of a Super learner-based model for predicting survival in Chinese Han patients with resected colorectal cancer
We developed and externally validated a Super learner-based model for patients with Stage I–III colorectal cancer, which could provide the probability of death from colorectal cancer in patients with resected colorectal cancer.
Gastrointestinal Surgery
Prognostic value of lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio in patients with gastric cancer after surgery: a multicentre study
Lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio, a novel immune inflammation-based score (IBS), superior to other IBS, could more accurately predict post-operative morbidity and prognosis of gastric cancer.
Gynecology
Significance of para-aortic lymph node evaluation in patients with FIGO IIIC1 cervical cancer
The para-aortic lymph node evaluation was not associated with better survival in patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics IIIC1p cervical cancer who were clinically para-aortic lymph node-negative.
Evaluation of safety and diagnostic performance for flexible hysteroscopy in 1591 outpatient cases
We retrospectively investigated the institution’s outpatient flexible hysteroscopy cases. It is highly safe, with a slight negligible effect on ascites cytology. However, the diagnosis should be determined by multidisciplinary approaches.
Head & Neck
Effectiveness of planned surveillance for detecting second primary head and neck cancers after endoscopic resection of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
Surveillance of the head and neck regions after endoscopic resection of esophageal cancer is required to detect second primary head and neck cancers at an early stage, thereby facilitating a minimally invasive treatment.
Orthopedics/Sarcoma
Skeletal muscle measurements predict surgical wound complications but not overall survival in patients with soft tissue sarcoma
Palliative and Supportive Care
Understanding help-seeking behaviour in relation to psychosocial support services among Japanese cancer patients
This study investigated the actual status of the utilization of such services and examined the related factors of their use using the transtheoretical model.
Radiation Oncology
Stereotactic body radiotherapy in patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer: Does beam-on time matter?
We evaluated our SBRT treatment results for patients with early-stage NSCLC using two different motion management systems. We have not found any difference in treatment outcomes in the whole cohort. Interestingly, we found that beam-on time might significantly affect treatment outcomes.
National survey of radiation oncologists’ practice patterns regarding hormone-naïve prostate cancer with bone metastases
A national survey on the current status of for hormone-naïve prostate cancer with bone metastases identified radiation oncologists’ attitudes and practice patterns of radiotherapy in Japan.
Thoracic Medicine
Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the lung: CT findings and clinical course of 35 cases
Pulmonary epithelioid hemangioendothelioma showed three computed tomography patterns: multiple small nodules pattern, multiple nodules with large lesions pattern and single lesion pattern. Patients with pulmonary epithelioid hemangioendothelioma have good prognosis.
Urology
Recent malignant testicular tumor trend in Japan, a country with an aging population: a large-scale study of 2012–2015 hospital-based cancer registry data
The mean age of testicular germ cell tumor patients is nearly 40 years. The proportion of older testicular germ cell tumor patients and testicular lymphoma patients was higher than previously thought.
Clinical Trial Note
A multi-institutional randomized phase III trial comparing anatomical segmentectomy and wedge resection for clinical stage IA non-small cell lung cancer in high-risk operable patients: Japan Clinical Oncology Group Study JCOG1909 (ANSWER study)
This trial aimed to confirm the superiority of anatomical segmentectomy over wedge resection in terms of overall survival in high-risk operable patients with clinical stage IA non-small cell lung cancer.
Cancer Genetics Report
Lung adenocarcinoma in a patient with Li–Fraumeni syndrome bearing a novel germ-line mutation, TP53R333Vfs*12
Lung adenocarcinoma arising in a Li–Fraumeni syndrome patient, bearing germline mutation, R333Vfs*12 of TP53, is sensitive to epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors, such as gefitinib and osimertinib.
Epidemiology Note
Estimation of lifetime cumulative mortality risk of lung cancer by smoking status in Japan
Lifetime cumulative mortality risks differed greatly according to smoking status. The results of this study may be useful for the development of tailored prevention programs.
