The VZV Research Foundation dedicates this publication of the proceedings of the Third International Conference on the Varicella-Zoster Virus to Michiaki Takahashi, developer of the chickenpox vaccine.
Dr. Takahashi's interest in varicella dates back to 1964, when his then 3-year-old son was suffering from a severe case of the disease. He remembers asking himself, “What if varicella could be prevented?” Eight years later, Dr. Takahashi successfully isolated a strain of varicella virus from a child with chickenpox.
Dr. Takahashi is professor emeritus of virology at Osaka University (Osaka, Japan), where he currently serves as director of The Foundation for Microbial Diseases. He also is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the VZV Research Foundation.
On 10 March 1997, Dr. Takahashi was presented with the Foundation's Award for Scientific Achievement. Calling the award “the highest honor in my career,” he expressed his “hope that, in the near future, the varicella vaccine is helpful in saving many children from severe chickenpox.”
