Sir,
We are grateful to Monnet et al.1 for their thoughts on our review2 of the public's knowledge and beliefs about antibiotic resistance. As they acknowledged, we did not search the grey literature. The studies they provide from the grey literature are important. We are encouraged to note that, similar to three European studies (Greece 88%,3 Austria 74%4 and Portugal 72%5) in our review, 83%–84% of those surveyed across 27 European countries were aware that ‘unnecessary use of antibiotics is making them become ineffective’.
