Message from the Guest Editors

Dear Colleagues,

As the guest editors of an upcoming special issue of the Forensic Sciences Research (FSR), which focuses on Forensic Document Examination, we would like to invite you to contribute to what we hope will be an outstanding collection of reviews/original articles/case reports on this topic. This special issue aims to showcase advances in this area, thus bringing our readers enlightenment and new information. With this goal, this special issue will outline a comprehensive series of research and commentary on forensic handwriting examination and questioned document examination, including but not limited to: examination and analysis of ink, toner, paper, stamp devices or impressions, printed documents, handwriting, altered documents, and quality assurance.

Guest Editors

Prof. Xu Yang

Academy of Forensic Science, China

Xu YangProf. Xu Yang, graduated from the Criminal Investigation Police University of China in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science degree, he has been engaged in scientific research, appraisal, and educational training in the field of forensic science, including material evidence technology, at the Academy of Forensic Science, China. He has presided over or participated in more than 10 national and provincial scientific research projects, presided over or participated in the development of 8 national standards for document examination, and developed more than 20 technical specifications issued by the Ministry of Justice. He has published more than 50 papers and has been the chief editor or co-editor of nearly 20 monographs. He has presided over and participated in projects that have won two Second Prizes for Shanghai Science and Technology Progress. In 2009, he was awarded the title of the First National Advanced Individual in Judicial Appraisal by the Ministry of Justice.

Dr. Carolyne Bird

Forensic Science SA, Australia

Carolyne BirdDr Carolyne Bird is a practicing forensic document examiner at Forensic Science SA, in Adelaide, Australia, where she commenced employment in 2002. She has a Doctor of Philosophy in Human Bioscience from La Trobe University, Melbourne where her work investigated forensic handwriting examiners' skill in determining disguised and simulated handwriting. She has been involved in several national and international working groups in the areas of education and training, validation, capability mapping and human factors in handwriting examination. Carolyne is the current Vice President of the Australasian Society of Forensic Document Examiners, Inc. She has co-authored twelve peer-reviewed journal articles and authored three book chapter on aspects of forensic document examination.

Message from the Guest Editors

Dear Colleagues,

Forensic experts are increasingly facing significant challenges in identifying human remains in their casework, whether in everyday or exceptional circumstances. This Special Issue aims to address specific cases in forensic identification, namely of bodies in an advanced state of preservation, burned remains, and body parts recovered in the water, among others. The holistic perspective of identification is central to this Special Issue, encompassing the knowledge from many various scientific disciplines used in forensic practice, such as dermatoglyphics, genetics, odontology, anthropology, or pathology The importance of the combination of methods, contextual information, and personal belongings or other artefacts are also considered. The aim is to emphasize the importance of collaborative, evidence based, and unbiased approaches, making use of cutting-edge technologies and the know-how of a team of experts. In this Special Issue, theoretical articles on various identification challenges and particularly demanding case studies are welcome.

Certified forensic anthropologist, with more than 550 cases reported. Co-founder and former President of FASE-Forensic Anthropology Society of Europe.

Dr. Zuzana Obertová

Zuzana ObertovaDr. Zuzana Obertová is currently an Adjunct Lecturer in forensic anthropology at the University of Western Australia. She is the Vice-President of the Forensic Anthropology Society of Europe (FASE), Assistant Editor at Forensic Science International, certified technical assessor for facial image comparison, and co-editor of the book Statistics and Probability in Forensic Anthropology. Her current research interests encompass morphological assessment of skeletal remains, trauma analysis, stable isotope analysis, and facial image comparison.
