Abstract
Ibn Kabar, a Coptic scholar and priest in Cairo’s famous Hanging Church, dedicated Chapter 17 of his masterpiece The Lamp of Darkness to explaining the ritual of the Eucharist as he knew it at the time. From its beginning until the conclusion of the service, Ibn Kabar proves himself to be an expert in the intricacies of Coptic liturgical practice, taking the time to delve into the technicalities of chant and ritual needed by the clergy, deacons, and chanters. In doing so, he sought to provide a helpful educational tool for professionals, who may otherwise seek this knowledge in a variety of arcane sources. In the process, Ibn Kabar demonstrates a well-rounded knowledge of the diversity of practice in medieval Egypt, often commenting on differences in ritual between Cairo, Scetis, and Southern Egypt.
