Abstract
Ibn Sabbā‘’s comprehensive work on ecclesiastical subjects, The Precious Jewel, covers the eucharistic service over several chapters, digressing in the middle to describe the rite of consecration of the patriarch. Ibn Sabbā‘’s style is unique in adopting a consistent philosophy of ritual interpretation. Influenced in particular by the Greek writings of Ps.-Dionysius, Ibn Sabbā‘ goes to great lengths to demonstrate how liturgical worship here on earth mimics the hosts of angels in heaven. The result is a vision of liturgy particularly interested in proper hierarchy and acceptable etiquette among the clergy participating in this well-ordered earthly vision of heaven.
