James Crosby has edited the last 110 letters written by Francisco de Quevedo before his death in 1645. The author has used a new manuscript which contains better versions of the previously published letters, and 28 unpublished ones. This is a fundamental contribution to the studies on Quevedo and his works, and allows a better knowledge of his personal ideas on literature and politics. Most of these letters were written while Quevedo was in prison (1639–43), and show to what extent he was able to keep in touch with the political situation of Spain thanks to his contacts with well-informed friends

Crosby's text is preceded by an accomplished introduction, which contains all the relevant bibliographical information on the manuscript used. In this section, the author also offers valuable information on Quevedo's circle of friends, particularly on Pedro Pacheco Girón. There is, additionally, a detailed account of the diagnosis of Quevedo's illness, which would lead to his death, based on the symptoms described in his last letters
