ABSTRACT
Tassadit Imache's semi-autobiographical novel Une Fille sans histoire traces the history and memory of a Franco-Maghrebian family at the time of the Algerian war in France. I argue that through a close reading of a family photograph, the main protagonist, Lil, reflects on her itinerary as someone caught between two histories and two cultures (the French and the Algerian) marked by the violence of colonial legacy. It is through voicing the narratives of her Algerian father's silenced anti-colonial and immigrant memory in France that Lil finally maps out her cultural and political affiliation with him.
