Abstract
Chapter 10 begins the final portion of the book which focuses on specific areas of space policy. This chapter examines civilian space policy including space science. While the focus of most of the book has been on human spaceflight and military space applications, this chapter begins by detailing some of the other major aspects of space policy in the United States including planetary defense, Landsat, and weather. It then turns to some of the major policy choices that must be made including the use of robots versus humans, the high cost and the possibilities of international cooperation, and increasing inclusion and diversity in the field of space. Finally, it turns to an emerging civil space policy question in terms of space situational awareness (knowing what is in space and where it is going) and space traffic management.
