During the last 50 years the development and implementation of better treatments, combined with improvements in clinical settings and preventative strategies have resulted in a significant reduction in cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality.
Despite this progress, CVD remains a major social and economic challenge in Europe:
...
In addition to the loss of, and impact on, human lives, the economic burden of CVD is huge—exceeding €210 billion per year in the European Union alone—and is expected to increase in the coming decades.
The burden of CVD is immense and greater than any other condition, yet CVD does not currently receive the attention decision-makers reserve for other diseases. This is why Advocacy has been recognized as a European Society of Cardiology (ESC) strategic priority.
The aim of ESC Advocacy is to bring CVD health higher up on decision-makers’ agenda and to leverage the knowledge of the cardiology profession to promote policy and regulation favourable to CVD health.
