Mark Nicholls speaks to David G. Harrison in the latest of our pioneer series about his work in understanding the mechanisms of atherosclerosis and hypertension
Dr David G. Harrison has played a key part in advancing the understanding of the mechanisms of atherosclerosis and hypertension over the years, but it is his work on the immune system and inflammation within hypertension which is posing new questions, and potentially opening fresh avenues of therapeutic response.
The son of a physician from Oklahoma, became interested in medicine from a young age and went to medical school where he developed a love of haematology before discovering a passion for cardiology. He received his MD degree from the University of Oklahoma Medical School in 1974 and then went Duke University in North Carolina for his internal medicine and cardiology training. ‘That was a very fortunate move for me because Duke at the time was, and still is, a leading medical centre in the United States and provided an opportunity for me to meet some outstanding leaders in American medicine,’ he recalled. ‘Even though my training at Duke was largely clinical, it provided an opportunity for me to understand what clinician scientists and physician scientists do.’
