ESC CardioMed—the new ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine

A day earlier, Profs Thomas F. Lüscher, John A. Camm, Patrick W. Serruys and Gerald Maurer, the editors of the new ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine (Figure 1), met at the same venue with representatives of Oxford University Press, the publisher of this huge electronic database that will be promoted under its brand name ESC CardioMed, to finalize the project that is scheduled to be presented at the ESC’s Annual Congress in Munich in early September of this year.

The textbook consists of 64 chapters, each led by a chapter coordinator, and over 800-chapter authors. The product is highly illustrated with figures, tables, and videos and covers the entire spectrum of cardiovascular medicine from embryology to ethnicity, from pharmacology to surgery, from coronary artery to structural interventions, and from hypertension to heart failure. The concept involves relatively small chapters that can be easily updated by the chapter authors on an ongoing basis as the field evolves. There will most likely be updates after each of the large meetings, such as the ESC Annual Congress, the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions, and the American College of Cardiology meeting. Except for a few late chapters, the product is now in production, and proofs are currently being corrected by the editors and chapter coordinators.
