Alessia Gimelli, Fondazione Toscana G. Monasterio, Italy @alessia_gimelli
Dr Alessia Gimelli is a cardiologist and nuclear medicine specialist. She started her career at the Institute of Clinical Physiology (Pisa, Italy), under the mentorship of Professor Antonio L’Abbate, focusing from the beginning on her interest in cardiac imaging. She leads the Nuclear Cardiology Unit and the related training program at Fondazione Toscana G. Monasterio, Pisa, Italy, since 2014.
Dr Gimelli has extensive experience in clinical research on cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular imaging and has contributed to several international high-profile projects. She has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and has held senior Editorial Board roles at European Heart Journal Open and Imaging.
Dr Gimelli is an active member of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), serving in many different roles over the past 20 years. She has been a nucleus committee member for the Nominating Committee of the ESC Board, the ESC Congress Programme Committee, the Advocacy Committee, and the Media Committee (now the Communications Committee). She has also been a member of various Task Forces, including the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) Task Force on Governance, the ESC/EACVI joint Task Force on regulatory governance of diagnostic imaging devices – CT/Nuclear Imaging, and the EACVI Task Force on Women. She has been actively involved in the EACVI in the last three consecutive terms as Vice Chair and then Chair of the “Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac CT Section”, EACVI Vice-President, and then Treasurer.
In 2019 Dr Gimelli won the ESC grant “Women Transforming Leadership Programme” (WTLP) run by the Saïd Business School of the University of Oxford (UK). She used this opportunity to grow her understanding of and skills in leadership. She is also committed to supporting younger and early career colleagues, and in 2021 she won the WomenAsOne - 2022 ESCALATOR AWARDS in the Mentor Match Category.
Dr Gimelli is currently the Editor-in-Chief of EHJ – Imaging Methods and Practice.
