Abstract
Social aesthetics understood as the science of sensuously experienced encounters and relationships in general and of interpersonal encounters and relationships in particular provides us with knowledge that in medical-therapeutic practice becomes a key pillar of human-centred approaches to prevention and treatment. It is thus not only a science, but also an art that can be unfolded and developed as applied social aesthetics. As social and communicative beings we are the ones who create our world. How this world of ours is constituted, how we are able to live and experience it, depends on all of us. For those who practise social aesthetics in medicine, the question of how to create and shape life is a constant one and puts social aesthetics at the heart of the medical approach. The chief areas of interest in applied social aesthetics in medicine are above all the style of initial contact with the patient, para-verbality in patient encounters and the elegance of diagnostics, most notably the attractiveness of treatment forms, social-aesthetic therapy goals, providing new possibilities for patients’ cosmopoiesis/cosmopoetics. In the cosmopoetic processes (= development and creation of a beautiful and joyful life) the general Will to Beauty plays a crucial role. The Will to Beauty appears on the one hand as a natural force which attracts us and provides the power which we need for solving our problems and on the other hand it can be used as a cultural force which enables us to create a better and more joyful life.
