Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of mediation services in Scotland and explains what to expect from a mediator. An individual mediator or a mediation organisation will typically provide information about mediation that is easy to understand, answer questions the client may have about mediation, or allow the client time to consider mediation as an option and an opportunity to help resolve difficult situations. If the client decides to try mediation, an appointment will be made to discuss the situation, and to see whether mediation is appropriate. This chapter considers the principles of mediation; what a party can expect a mediator to do; how a mediator speaks and what he does during mediation sessions; some of the questions asked by a mediator to a client; how a mediator helps in preparing parties for a meeting and what the mediator does during those meetings; the mediator's approaches during the mediation session; the outcomes of mediation; and mediation training.
