Abstract
This chapter examines history of diagnosing the roots of deception. In order to mitigate the occurrences of deception, both the police and the judicial departments institutionalized two psychological tools for diagnosing deception. These technological wonders are known as the lie detector and psychotherapy. The lie detector's origins can be traced from the Harvard psychology laboratory, the Berkeley police department, and the Scientific Crime Laboratory at Northwestern University. These two devices were not well-received by the people, but the debates and discussions that revolved around the use of these devices led to promote a view of the normal self as governed by deceitfulness and self-deception.
