Abstract
This chapter analyzes the mid-range of practices between the opposite poles of polyandry and wife sale, including transactional polyamory, marital prostitution (either with husband as pimp or with the wife contracted to a brothel), and conditional wife sale. Whereas polyandry, polyamory, conditional wife sale, and outright wife sale usually took place in rural areas, most retail prostitution involved rural people who had migrated to urban areas as refugees or in search of work. For this reason, women were most vulnerable to coercion and exploitation in retail sex work.
