Abstract
This chapter analyses four important variations of wife sale: indirect wife sale (i.e., “compensated divorce”); widow remarriage (which was modeled on direct wife sale, indirect wife sale, or polyandry); wife sale in the husband’s absence; and fraudulent wife sale (in which the wife posed as a widow). It concludes by showing how fraud ties them all together.
