The undertaking of this project was first suggested to me in 2000 by theoretician Gene Sharp, senior scholar in Boston at the Albert Einstein Institution. He said that the events of Vykom needed to be reinterpreted and encouraged me to embark on this major research endeavor.
I am grateful to Christopher A. Miller for sketching an initial draft chronology of the Vykom satyagraha, while working for the Albert Einstein Institution, mainly from secondary sources. Chris subsequently acted as my research assistant for four years and has my deep appreciation for his help on this project while we were both in Oxford.
This venture could not have been carried out without the assistance of the University of Oxford’s Rothermere American Institute (RAI) in Britain. During 2004–5, as the resident senior fellow, I was able to review British colonial records and secondary sources in the Bodleian Library, and to view archival records. The RAI recognized the worth of this research by providing Chris Miller with an office so that he could assist me during 2004–5. In 2005, the RAI gave me a grant to travel to Kerala. There, in Vykom, thanks to the kind help of P. Sanal Mohan, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, I walked the environs to grasp the social organization, roads, human settlements, ponds, and waterways. I took photographs, developed raw notes, and interviewed N. K. Jose, who remembered hearing firsthand accounts from volunteers in the events of the 1920s. I also conducted formal interviews of a number of historians.
