Abstract

The pendulum never ceases to be a source of interest to scientists, yet the mechanisms used to maintain it in oscillation are strangely neglected in the general history of science and technology. In the past, escapements have received attention from scientists of the first rank, such as Galileo, Huygens, Airy and Kelvin. Others, like John Harrison, Pierre Le Roy, Lord Grimthorpe and William Shortt, to name but a few, are almost unknown outside the horological fraternity. Here I must echo the aspirations of Professor David Landes of Harvard University upon discovering the wealth of interest to be found in the history and science of time measurement.
