To keep notes short, I have attempted to give the minimum information necessary for readers to pursue my references without having to consult the Works Cited at the end of this volume. I give volume and page, folio, or signature numbers after short titles. Where information in brackets follows these, it gives additional information, such as book, chapter, or line numbers, or traditional section identification numbers. References to early texts are to the earliest extant printed editions unless otherwise noted. References to Loeb Classical Library editions are to the most recent revisions, available online at www.loebclassics.com.
Throughout, I have generally preserved original orthography, modernizing only the letters u, v, i, j, and s, and eliminating ligatures. In translations—as in quotes originally in English—I use brackets to indicate substantial changes to individual words, such as modification of number or tense: for instance, the Latin curiae (courts) might appear as “cour[t]” in my translation to indicate the change to singular; perago (I accomplish or perform) might appear as “I perform[ed]” to indicate the change to past tense. Where translations are my own or where the phrasing of a text is important to my claims, I include the original in the notes. I am grateful to all those who have made my work easier by providing the many extraordinary translations on which I have drawn.
