Integrative dermatology is such an obvious concept that the paucity of practitioners offering it to patients is disappointing. Nutritional status strongly influences skin health; dietary change and dietary supplements should be first-line interventions in managing skin conditions. The folk medical traditions of the world include many herbal remedies for skin problems; botanical medicine has much to offer dermatology. The skin (along with the gastrointestinal tract) is the most common site of expression of stress-related ailments. I would like to see more dermatologists use or refer patients for mind/body interventions like hypnosis and visualization. (Strong evidence supports the success of mindfulness training and journaling in the treatment of psoriasis.) Whole system approaches such as Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine have good track records with atopic dermatitis and other chronic skin disorders.
Presumably, the reason that more dermatologists are not offering patients integrative treatment plans is that conventional medical and specialty training still do not include sufficient information on nutrition and health, botanical medicine, mind/body therapies, whole systems, and other subjects that make up the curriculum of the integrative medicine fellowship offered by the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. Our Center has now graduated more than 1,000 physicians from this intensive training—men and women from all specialties—but to date, few dermatologists have enrolled.
