Abstract
The fifth chapter of this book analyses a set of episodes that, for the most part, take place in and around the northern capital of Samaria. The first episode (6:8–23) begins with the king of Aram upbraiding his senior officers, as he suspects a traitor in the midst. Informed that Elisha the prophet is somehow privy even to the king’s most confidential speech, he sends a threatening host to apprehend the suspect. By means of an amazing turn of events, Elisha is the one who arrests the temporarily sightless Aramean soldiers, leading them into Samaria, where he orders that a banquet be prepared for the enemies of Israel. The next episode in this section (6:24–7:2) moves from feast to famine, as Ben-Hadad mobilizes the Aramean army and lays siege to Samaria. In a time of scarcity and desperation, the king of Israel’s wrath is kindled by two cannibal mothers, and he puts the blame squarely on Elisha. Unmoved by the king’s death threat, the scene comes to an end with a bold declaration from the prophet that food will be aplenty within twenty-four hours. Although Elisha is formally absent from the rest of 2 Kings 7, his prophetic word directs the action presented in the third episode studied in this chapter. There are four characters who are unlikely catalysts for a powerful reversal in this tableau, and their comical actions are instrumental for the fulfillment of Elisha’s bold declaration in the previous section.
