For centuries Oxford University Press has been among the finest publishing houses in the world, and I am extremely grateful to Tom Perridge and his team for unflagging support, and to the Delegates of the Press for their commitment to impressive standards without compromise.
Several institutions provided me with opportunities to lecture on this material, including Tyndale University College and Seminary in Toronto, with thanks to Dan Scott, Larry Hopperton, and Janet Clark, and Crandall University, where I am deeply appreciative of inquisitive students who patiently study ancient literature, along with the consistent support of President Bruce Fawcett and Academic VP Seth Crowell.
Every year at the university we host the annual Murray Lecture, and Nicholas Wolterstorff deserves a twenty-one-gun salute for his rich encouragement, careful questioning, and thoughtful conversation around the topic of this book.
Various colleagues rendered assistance along the way, including Brian Aucker, Walter Brueggemann, Mark Leuchter, Ian Young, Erin Vearncombe, David Lamb, Deven MacDonald, Jon Vickery, Ellen White, Brent Strawn, Edith Humphrey, Louis Stulman, Jacob Wright, Paul Evans, Jeff Greenman, and Jeremy Hutton. Lots of editing took place in Shanghai on a lecture tour with my great friend John Stackhouse, mentor and model to all. I also value the opportunity to serve the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament and the chance to read the highest quality of current scholarship on the Hebrew Bible, so John Jarick, Yvonne Sherwood, Duncan Burns, and the editorial board deserve a word of thanks.
