Abstract
This first chapter sets the scene for the rest of the book. America has always been a religious country anxious about its own religiosity. Despite many battles and challenges, the national motto is “In God we trust.” Yet the First Amendment is treasured for protecting citizens' right to worship, or not, in whatever way they deem proper. Americans have neither affirmed a state religion nor sought to expel faith from public life. Even so to be an American means having a view about America's God. This book tells the story of the confluence of thought about religion and the future for America and the hidden but powerful current of reflection about American religion and America's loss of faith.
