Abstract
Whether the Church of England ought to employ liberal or restrictive approaches to the admission of candidates for baptism has been the subject of much debate recently. In contrast with the Roman Catholic Church, the use of canonical regulation in the Church of England is limited. Canon law, which governs preparation and admission, imposes a general duty on ordained clergy not to refuse baptism: it confers a ministerial right only to delay, and norms have been devised at the diocesan level to regulate the use of this discretion. Celebration of baptism is governed principally by liturgical rubrics and of after-care by canon law and, in more detail, by diocesan norms. This chapter examines these arrangements and also the canonical regulation of preparation for and admission to the twin initiation rite of confirmation, which has similarly been extensively supplemented by diocesan norms. It also discusses infant and adult baptism, conditional baptism, and rebaptism.
