Abstract
Like any other subject, the secret of success in pre-hospital care is preparation. This chapter is a brief introduction for anyone beginning to work in the pre-hospital care environment, covering the training and education required to work in pre-hospital care and what to expect from a career in the discipline, as well as individual qualifications and their entry requirements. Medical equipment is discussed with a rationale for a choice of both basic and advanced equipment. A suggested drug list is offered and methods of transport and vehicles are also covered. Legal considerations in relation to consent, competence, and working with other emergency services within the law (including an overview of the roles of the emergency services) are discussed in detail and finally, a list of resources is included.
