I would like to acknowledge the Getty Conservation Institute for granting me a Guest Scholarship in 2007 and allowing me to start this project. I warmly thank Giacomo and all the staff at the GCI for useful discussions and tips, and for the great time I had in LA. Jerry Podany kindly attempted to broaden my restricted view of archaeometry, I hope he succeeded somehow … I am also grateful to friends who patiently introduced me to archaeological problems and logics of inquiring, at least as far as a non‐archaeologist can go: Raffaele C. De Marinis, Paolo Bellintani, Marica Venturino.
All collaborators who contributed to the volume with very interesting and up‐to‐date technical sections are acknowledged. The book substantially improved thanks to their expertise and specialized knowledge.
Mrs Barbara Vianello invaluably helped in organizing my files, the images, the copyright permissions and, in critical moments, also my mind and my time. Matteo Parisatto and Michele Secco prepared and/or modified some of the graphics. Stefano Castelli skilfully managed slide scanning and photographic work, even at short notice. Judy Santos, Valerie Greathouse, Tom Shreves and Annette Pedrosian @ GCI; and Emanuela Danieletto and Serenella Boesso @UNIPD readily and cheerfully satisfied my pressing and obsessive reference search. A special hug to Judy and Emanuela!
