Abstract
This chapter offers an account of co-curricular activities in undergraduate education and explores their significance for vocational discernment. In conversation with the work of Victor Turner, it suggests that the power and potential of these student development activities lie in the rituals, contests, and images that such venues provide. The chapter offers a wide range of vignettes, both historical and contemporary, in which the activities in which students participate outside the classroom become the focal point for a consideration of their vocations. The rituals and contests in which students are engaged, both as players and spectators, help them identify with other members of their “tribe” and thereby create communities of discourse that can more adequately appropriate the narratives and virtues discussed elsewhere in this book. This “tribal identity” can also provide an important opportunity for educators to develop mentoring communities.
