Abstract
This chapter examines vocation as it intersects with the landscape of higher education. It suggests that, among the many purposes of colleges and universities, the call to educate for the common good stands out as particularly important. The chapter analyzes how present realities impinge upon the ability of these institutions to fulfill this element of their collective academic mission. In particular, it examines the centrifugal tendencies of our current context, in which the central focus of higher education seems to be spinning out in every direction. It argues that the language of vocational discernment can address some of these tendencies in ways that are attentive to educating for the common good. A concluding section examines two exemplary vocational initiatives that have been implemented by specific institutions—namely, mentoring communities and a revised core curriculum—in order to create an ethos of vocation that attends to educating for the common good.
