Abstract
This book charts epochal changes in the politics and religion of the Japanese islands through a study of the cult of Prince Shōtoku, the purported founder of Japanese Buddhism and one of the greatest cultural icons of pre-modern Japan. The book's principal focus is on the roughly 200 years between Shōtoku's death in about 622 and the death of the Tendai Buddhist patriarch Saichō in 822. This period saw a series of revolutionary developments in the history of Japanese religion, including the expansion of the Buddhist tradition in Japan; the corresponding development of new conceptions of the afterlife; the rapid development of court-sponsored rituals and cults related to semi-historical royal ancestors such as the Yamato ruler Ōjin and his mother Jingū; the emergence of the concept of the sage ruler, or hijiri no kimi; the importation of continental divinatory and astrological texts and methods; and the expanded use of rites of spirit pacification.
