Abstract
This chapter is a synthesis of the findings of the study, considered as a whole and oriented constructively towards theological reflection. The significance of covenant to union with Christ is evaluated and informs the theology of solidarity and exchange that underlies atonement. The connection to the ontology of the incarnation is recognized, with the patristic concern for such ontological issues defended as an outworking of New Testament soteriology. The role of the Holy Spirit in relation to the subjective activity of faith is further explored, the latter considered necessary to a proper account of union with Christ, along with the experience of divine presence in the sacraments. The need for care in applying Platonic categories to the New Testament is affirmed and, along with this, the term theosis is considered problematic, specifically in relation to New Testament research. Finally, some reflections on the implications for Christian ethics are offered.
