Abstract
Chapter 2 provides education regarding the nature of several key emotions (such as anger, happiness, anxiety, sadness, fear), including a discussion of the structure and function of these emotions. Emotion identification skills are introduced. The three parts of an emotional experience are presented (thoughts, feelings, behaviors) and adolescents learn to track the before, during, and after of their emotional experiences. The role of avoidance or other relevant emotional behaviors in the development and maintenance of emotion cycles is also covered. This chapter sets the stage for both the “transdiagnostic” focus and the focus on problematic emotional behaviors in the UP-A.
