This book is a result of eight years of research and re-authorship. It would not have been possible without the firm support of mentors and colleagues at King’s College London. Moreover, as a young lecturer at the War Studies Department, I learnt to look beyond purely academic questions to those more to do with matters of historical intuition. I appreciated the need to study and understand the emotions and motivations of those who helped shape India’s approach to the world over the last six and a half decades.
A War Studies Research Fellowship, a Teaching Fellowship at the Defence Studies Department, King’s College London, an Overseas Research Studentship awarded by the British Government, and numerous other research awards and bursaries gave me the opportunity and luxury to work on a script free from the usual anxieties internalised by writers. I would like to thank Matt Uttley at the Defence Studies Department for offering to renew several teaching contracts—allowing a smooth and less-worrisome transition to professional academe. Mervyn Frost at War Studies provided me with the comfort and space to continue to work on this project as a member of staff. Mervyn’s delicate approach cannot be overstated.
