Recovering the history of Benjamin Collins and the Salisbury Journal has taken me into archives and libraries in England and the United States and has in fact put me in touch with an active community of scholarship that includes academics, family descendants, historians, librarians, and newspapermen. Among those who have helped me along the way I would like to thank John Bidwell, Jeremy Black, Matthew Brack, Colin Brodie, Michael Crump, Norman Evans, Derek Gladwyn, Michael Harris, Gerald Harriss, Charles Hind, Clive Hurst, Andrea Immel, Joanna Innes, M. J. Jannetta, Graham Jefcoate, Paul Langford, Geoffrey Martin, Ian Maxted, Robin Myers, Roy Porter, Esther Potter, The Earl of Radnor, James Raven, R. H. Reed, K. H. Rogers, Jenny Ruthven, Margaret Smith, Nancy Steel, John Styles, Michael Treadwell, Michael Turner, Gareth Weekes, Ian Willison, Joseph Wisdom, and Marjorie Wynne.
This work owes something to every scholar cited in the footnotes here, especially to the late Graham Cranfield and Roy M. Wiles for their pioneering work on the eighteenth-century provincial newspaper trade in England, and to the late Albert H. Smith, for his pioneering work on Benjamin Collins.
