Soybean looper (SBL) is one of the most economically important insect pest affecting soybean in Arkansas. A trial was conducted on a grower field in Phillips County, Arkansas to evaluate the efficacy of Chrysodeixis includens nucleopolyhedrovirus (ChinNPV) on soybean looper. Plot size was four rows by 50-ft long on 38-inch rows, arranged in an RCB design with four replications. Insecticides were applied with a Mud-Master sprayer equipped with a multi-boom delivering 10 gpa at 40 psi through 80-02 dual flat fan nozzles with 19.5-inch spacing. Insecticide application occurred on 30 Aug. SBL densities were determined by taking 25 sweeps per plot with a 15-inch diameter net. Samples were taken on 2 Sep, 6 Sep, and 9 Sep, 3, 7, and 10 days after treatment (DAT), respectively. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and means were separated using a Duncan’s New MRT (P < 0.10).
SBL densities in the untreated control ranged from 50 to 16.6/25 sweeps, 3 and 10 DAT, respectively (Table 1). At 3, 7, and 10 DAT, all treatments reduced SBL densities when compared with the untreated control. Prevathon delivered the greatest control of SBL at 3, 7, and 10 DAT, but was no different than ChinNPV 1.4 or 5.6 oz/acre at 10 DAT.1
