Abstract

1. We aimed to analyse the 120 min hyperinsulinemic glucose clamp regarding the time aspect of relationships between glucose disposal rate (GDR) and cardiovascular risk factors.

2. The isoglycemic, hyperinsulinemic glucose clamp was performed on 19 borderline hypertensive (BP≥ 140/90 mmHg), but otherwise healthy, young men. GDR was calculated from 20 min periods at different time points and related to baseline risk factors and responses to a mental stress test.

3. GDR at 60, 90 and 120 min correlated with systolic BP, heart rate (HR), body mass index (BMI) and lipid levels as well as to HR, BP and plasma catecholamine levels during mental stress. Though not statistically significant at all time points, the relationships showed consistency from 40-50 min onwards. (See Table)

GDR, glucose disposal rate; SBP-120, SBP at 120 min of clamp; HR-MST, HR during mental stress test (MST); Epi, epinephrine; NE, norepinephrine; -A; after announcement of MST; -D, during announcement of MST.

4. We suggest that 60-90 min glucose clamps may provide information about relationships between insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular risk factors in borderline hypertensive, young Caucasian men.
