Cover illustration: Akropolis, a drama in four acts by Stanislaw Wyspiafiski, 1904. The published edition of Akropolis was designed by Wyspiafiski himself, who was an artist as well as a dramatist. Its cover illustration represents Cracow's Wawel Hill, with its royal castte, royal cathedral, and royal tombs, as the acropolis of the Polish nation. In Wyspiafiski's dramatic fantasy, the historica] spirits of past centuries stil] inhabit the nationally sacred space of the Wawel, animating the cultural endeavors of turn-of-the-century Cracow.
