Abstract
This chapter turns to historical depictions of Theoderic the Great and how he was treated by scholars in various time periods. It starts with one of Theoderic's longtime chroniclers, Cassiodorus, and the historical milieu in which he lived, as well as the state of his manuscripts during his life and after his death. The chapter then jumps to the present—the twenty-first century—and how modern scholars interpret Theoderic. Afterward, Theoderic is explored in the Middle Ages and the Enlightenment period. Theoderic is also covered in European historiography of the nineteenth century. Finally, the chapter explores Theoderic as he is understood in Germany from its imperial period to the aftermath of the Third Reich.
