Abstract
This chapter considers ways in which annotated books provide evidence, first of the one-on-one experience of a reader responding to a book as to a companion; second of the way in which the “conversation” between a book and a reader might prepare the reader for public discussions, and finally of the sociable exchange or sharing of books. In these cases, where reading promotes social engagement or provides a substitute for it, genre proves less important than function. Whatever kind of book it is, it evokes from the reader a response couched in a distinct personal tone that sets it apart from most of the working books of the previous chapter. The model for writing of this kind is not provided by the book itself, nor by the rules of formal critical analysis, but by the conventions of social interaction.
