Abstract
This introductory chapter describes the reading environment of Romantic readers. It suggests that the period between 1790 and 1830 saw the beginning and end of a reading boom, a boom activated not so much by social, political, or technological changes as by competitive commercial activity, especially advertising and reviewing. When the boom was over, a somewhat chastened industry started up a new path, courting the mass market that it had previously been inclined to spurn. The chapter then discusses the multifaceted publishing system of the time, from the reader's point of view, dealing with basic facts about the book trade, with common economic calculations, with the availability of reading matter, and with customs and fashions related to reading.
