Abstract
This chapter describes the changes in Johnson and Boswell's friendship between May 1778 and March 1781. A key drama in their friendship was Boswell's constant need for proof of Johnson's love and esteem. In response, Johnson regularly tried to get his insecure friend to accept that his esteem and love were constant, and also encouraged Boswell to manage more effectively the depression he reported regularly and at times seemed to nurture.
