Abstract
This chapter describes the new environment in which the Stalin Prize Committee (KSP) worked from the beginning of 1948 onwards, with particular emphasis on Tikhon Khrennikov's influence as head of the Union of Composers and chairman of the KSP Music Section. At the KSP's plenary session held on January 12, 1948, Mikhail Khrapchenko and the entire Music Section were absent. A huge, unprecedented storm over the state of Soviet music was looming, and a new ideological campaign was emerging. This chapter begins with an overview of the 1948 Resolution on music and its connection to the Stalin Prize awards, and specifically to Vano Muradeli's opera The Great Friendship. It then considers the music nominations for the Stalin Prize and the failure of Khrennikov's comic opera Frol Skobeyev to win a prize in the spring of 1950. It also discusses the failure of Soviet opera under Khrennikov's watch. the controversy surrounding Herman Zhukovsky's opera Heart and Soul, and Khrennikov's fate after the Zhukovsky affair.
