Structure of hyphal cell surface in Aspergillus species. Hyphal cells of Aspergillus species are covered with a cell wall. Cell wall polysaccharides are composed mainly of α-1,3-glucan (with short α-1,4-linked glucoside spacers), β-1,6-branched β-1,3-glucan, chitin, and galactomannan. The reducing ends of chitin and galactomannan are crosslinked with the nonreducing ends of β-1,3-glucan. α-1,3-Glucan, galactomannan, and GAG are included in the ECM together with some secreted proteins. Glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored cell-wall proteins (GPI-CWP) have essential roles in cell wall biosynthesis and remodeling.
